Frequently Asked Questions

For Personal Use

Why KeepMe?

Why should I use KeepMe?

KeepMe makes it simple to keep your details up to date with other people and organisations, easy to keep in contact with others, and trivial to change your address when you next move house. It’s fast, convenient, and 100% private.

Why should I trust KeepMe?

Because KeepMe shuts everyone, including us, away from your information. KeepMe works while keeping you virtually anonymous, and your details unknown.

How do you make money?

We charge our Partner organisations. They pay us because KeepMe solves a giant pain (keeping details up to date), cost-effectively, and in a highly private way.

Sharing

Who can I share with?

Other KeepMe users, including people and organisations.

How do I share my information?

During the connection process with a person or an organisation, you decide what specific information to share.

Can I decide what details to share?

Yes. You can create different profiles to suit different types of personal relationships, and when you connect to organisations, you decide what details to provide, just as in real life.

What information should I share?

You should share whatever you normally would. KeepMe makes sharing and updating your information easier, and more private – it does not change the behaviour of other users. So, be careful when sharing personal information.

Can I stop sharing?

Yes, at any time.

Can I change or update what I have shared?

Yes, at any time.

Can I disconnect from anyone?

Yes, at any time.

Privacy

What's the most you know about me?

The mobile number you register with. Otherwise, you're anonymous to us.

Who sees my other details?

Other users can only see what you specifically decide to share with them. Nobody can see what you haven't shared with them — including us.

How safe is my personal information?

Extremely. When you put your information into KeepMe, no-one else can read it. This includes us and our employees.

How do you safeguard my information?

When you put your information into KeepMe, it’s automatically locked with keys that you alone control. Nobody else can unlock it, including us.

How can I share my information if no-one else can read it?

When you want to share information, you offer a key to read it. And you keep control of the key, so that you can revoke it at any time.

Can I make someone else forget details I’ve shared?

Just like in real life, you can’t erase someone’s memory. But in KeepMe, you can revoke the key they need to read your information from that point on. (This happens automatically when you disconnect from someone.)

Can I remove my information from KeepMe?

Yes, completely. If you were ever connected to any organisations, KeepMe's historic billing records may show that your mobile number was connected to them. But nothing else will exist.

About KeepMe

Who's behind KeepMe?

A bunch of entrepreneurs in Wellington, New Zealand. We’re led by Ross Hughson, former Chief Information Officer at both Westpac NZ, and Inland Revenue. At Inland Revenue, Ross started the voice recognition project many of us now use to make our calls to Inland Revenue quicker and easier. At Inland Revenue, Ross recognised the terrible inefficiency of every person having to update their information with each organisation, separately. He thought, "there must be a better way!"

Using KeepMe

What’s involved in using KeepMe?

It’s very simple. First, in the KeepMe app, add yourself as an organisation, so that people can connect to you. Second, when you’re ready, start getting direct access to those people’s data. Adding yourself and getting access can be done before lunchtime. From then on, you get new connections and updates automatically.

In what form do we get access to people’s data?

You have a couple of options. Our secure point-and-click Partner Portal allows you to instantly download the data as XML, which you can open and manipulate in Excel. We also provide a REST and JSON-based API, for you to programmatically update your business systems directly, with no manual intervention.

If you can’t read users’ data, how can we read it?

When a person connects and shares with you, they offer you a key to read their data. That key cannot be used by anyone but you, which means the sharing from the person to you is entirely private and secure.

Can we choose what data to ask for?

Yes, you can ask for any of the personal details we currently support. These are

  1. Name

How do we get going as a KeepMe Partner?
